Some Thoughts On The Coen Brothers
With all the hundreds of movies I love, and the many directors who have caught my eye, like Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorcese, and more recently Guillermo Del Toro, no other director's work, as a whole, have I cherished than the Coen Brothers.
Though every director has hits and misses, and the Coen Brothers aren't without their occasional misses, none hit as well and as often as the Coen Brothers. However, even their misses have something to offer. Mainly because the Coen Brothers, more than any other director, are highly unique. They provide a completely fresh take on their subject matter, whether its dark like Blood Simple or lighthearted like O Brother Where Art Thou, there will always be something surprising and innovative in every film.
The Coen Brothers, as a writers, have created some of the most interesting characters I've ever seen in film. Their characters can range from deeply driven to deeply undriven, but always filled with idiosyncrasies and quirks that make them, ultimately, human. Some characters that come to mind are of course Jeff Bridges' the Dude from Big Lebowski, both William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi's characters from Fargo, and Gabriel Byrne and Albert Finney's characters from Miller's Crossing. Given the wealth of characters in Coen Brothers films, I could go on and on, listing great characters from their films, because basically every one of their films is chock full of these lovable and sometimes downright petrifying, in the case of Javiar Bardem's Anton Chigurh from No Country For Old Men.
The Coen Brothers are an absolutely incredible movie making duo, possibly the best of all time, and I encourage you to take in all of their films, especially the ones on my top 10 list.

What ya think of 'True Grit'?

I gotta go with Brother Where Art... though I gotta give Clooney credit for a great performance, it fact it was the first Clooney performance I did like, don't know how responsible the directing was to that, it was a living cartoon, up til then I had only seen from the fat men like Gleason and Bulushi pulling off the physicality, comedy that Clooney has since repeated... I ran out to see the first showing of the new True Grit, and again felt Bridges performance enhanced it, and this time I can't credit the brothers, Bridges always had the knack for playing the best drunks...
